House Mimosa
A lovely place with a nice history for a relaxing holiday on the Atlantic Coast. In 1910, Hugh Richard Grosvenor, Viscount of Belgrave and Duke of Westminster built a hunting manor, “The Woolsack” near the village of Mimizan at the foot of the sea dunes of the Atlantic Coast on the shore of Lake Aureilhan. When he served in South Africa during the Boer Wars, he often stayed in “House Woolsack”, built by Cécil Rhodes in Cape Town, South Africa, and home of the famous writer Rudyard Kipling. He loved the place and when he acquired a property in Mimizan he decided to build the manor as a true copy of this house in South African - neo-Dutch style. He used the manor for hunting and horse riding. It is now called “Château Woolsack”.It was a meeting place for many of his famous friends such as Winston Churchill, who made many paintings of the surroundings, Charly Chaplin, Coco Chanel, Salvador Dali and many others, who came here to relax in the area. After his death in 1953 the property was inherited by his personnel and much later the horse stables of the estate were transformed into separate charming comfortable living houses:“House Duchesse”, which occupies the east- and south wing of the building and 2 next door houses, “Mimosa” and “Camélia” in the west wing, surrounded by a specious garden. The houses are totally independent, well isolated and separated by hedges and fences. They lie on the road from Mimizan to Sainte Eulalie, 2 km. from the centre of Mimizan, in a quiet setting amidst the forests of Les Landes, with a magnificent view on the Golf Course and the sea dunes beyond. The Château is at 500 m. from the houses on the lake. Directly opposite the houses lies the 6-holes (soon to be 9 holes) Golf Course of Mimizan: you walk from the garden straight onto the golf course. You can play on the greens or the driving range at very attractive rates! Just 250m behind the houses is Lake Aureilhan. It is a lovely site, perfect for swimming, sailing, rowing and fishing, or to make a stroll along the charming “Route Fleurie”.The beaches of the Atlantic Ocean in Mimizan Plage ( surfing!) are just 4km. away by bicycle (a bicycle path is just in front of the house!), or 6km. by car. House Mimosa measures 60 m2 and is well equipped to accommodate 6 p. ( max. 8) in 2 bedrooms: 1 bedroom with master bed and 1 bedroom with 2x2 single bunk beds and an extra couch for 2 p. in the living. The house is in cottage style, well furnished and decorated in fresh colours, and has a modern, well equiped kitchen. The house was completely renovated in 2005. In front of the house is a 1900 m2 fenced garden with a terrace and BBQ oven. Mimizan and Mimizan Plage are renowned beach resorts and offer all kind of facilities.
