La Belle Etoile
A stunning holiday home in the beautiful wine region of Bordeaux. This 18th century farmhouse has been converted into a very comfortable 5 bedroom holiday home with original huge wooden beams and stone walls, tastefully furnished in a mix of antique French and modern style. The house is equipped with all the comforts one would expect to find in a large family home including, fully fitted kitchen, satellite TV, DVD, video and stereo. Completely secluded in 3 acres of land with heated swimming pool, new outdoor hot tub and children's swings and climbing frame. Sun loungers, occasional tables and sun shades surround the pool while under the sprawling grape vine is a huge outdoor table with seating for 12 and a barbecue. Situated on the banks of the Gironde estuary, close to a tiny fishing port and 5 minutes from the famous citadel town of Blaye. The area is steeped in vineyards and wine chateaux with a beautiful swimming lake nearby. The Cote de Argent and the beautiful Atlantic beaches are very accessible by car. Arcachon, with Pyla sur Mer the largest sand dune in Europe, is approx 1 hour 15 minutes as is the stunning Cap Ferret. While Royan is less than 1 hour north and La Rochelle approx 1 hour 30 mins. About 3 hours drive will take you to Biarritz. Our house is in the Cote de Blaye, on the banks of the Gironde estuary. The area along the estuary has been designated a nature reserve where you can walk along and see a variety of birds and wildlife including heron and otter. Within a short walk of the house there are vineyards. Almost all the vineyards and chateaux can be visited, often without appointment or an itinerary and wine tasting can be arranged for you by the tourist information office in Blaye - just pop in! Car ferries run regularly to Lamarque in the Medoc and the world's most famous and expensive wine growers including Chateau Lafite. (This may need to be booked in advance). Cognac is a fascinating town where you can visit the famous distillaries and sample the wares of Martell and Hennessey and many others. Fishing is available at the nearby Lac Blanc (approx 15 minutes drive) with holiday permits available locally for 40 Euros. There is also a beautiful swimming lake at Lac Blanc which is very safe for children with a beach, swingpark and restaurant. Jonzac (approx 40 mins) boasts a huge indoor and outdoor swimming complex with artificial beaches, wave machines and water slides. The nearest town Blaye (5 minutes from the house), is very pretty and typically French with a market on Wednesday and Saturday. It has a number of good restaurants and café bars situated in and around the Citadel which is a huge old 17th century castle that occupies half the town. There is a supermarket, wine wholesalers, tourist information and many other shops including doctor, dentist and chemist. During July and August there is a lovely open air public swimming pool set in gardens and with a small shop. Throughout the summer there are festivals, concerts, exhibitions and sporting events taking place in the Citadel and surrounding villages.
