Aniane house
Experience the rural south of France from this fully-renovated, ancient stone house in the heart of a medieval village. No car is necessary to live comfortably in Aniane, as the village has a variety of grocery shops, bakeries, cafes and restaurants. Bus and taxi service are available to Montpellier and other regional destinations.
Aniane dates back to the 8th century; this house is located within the medieval city wall on a short, winding street too narrow for cars. Like most other houses in the village, it is taller than it is wide--with a small, stone-walled garden ideal for meals in warm weather, and a roof terrace with magnificent views of local gardens, terra cotta roofs, hills, vineyards, mountains and neighboring villages. Parking is available on nearby streets and squares, but not on rue de la Tour itself.
The area around Aniane is full of scenic, historical and cultural interest, with castles, romanesque churches, dramatic mountains and "gorges" (canyons, to Americans), wineries, the Herault river and beaches. The Cevennes mountains rise to the north of Aniane, and the Mediterrannean beaches are about forty minutes' drive to the south-east. Hiking, bicycling, kayaking and horse-back riding are all possible in the immediate vicinity.
