Quillan is charming and exciting little town with various pavement cafés and restaurants and a market on the Wednesdays and Saturdays. The ruin of the castle and the historic church are among the notable buildings of the town, which lies on the rapidly flowing river the Aude. This is not only the kingfisher’s and dipper’s habitat, the beaver is found here and for a number of years the otter has also been spotted again. The river is excellent for rafting.
During the summer season Quillan celebrates a cultural festival with a variety of outdoor concerts in the village squares. The town has an independent cinema with bar-restaurant and also a swimming centre with open-air pools. Some five bakeries, a few butchers and greengrocers, a fishmonger and a small supermarket are situated in the centre, as is the post office and various banks. In addition you will find a tourist office, providing you with all required information on Quillan and surroundings. On the outskirts you have two big supermarkets at your disposal.
Around: the area is popular for cycling, walking and white water canoeing. This is the very region for those interested in the Rennes-le-Chateau mystery and the history of the Cathars, illustrated by many sights, such as castle ruins and churches. There are markets once or twice a week in Limoux, Quillan and Espéraza. In many regional villages and hamlets, during the summer months up to autumn, people organise a ‘vide grenier’ (attic sale); a lovely chance to prowl around and find a good bargain! These sales often go together with local festivals and wine tasting events.Bella Vista has extensive tourist information available to you, maps and addresses f.e. where to hire bicycles etc.
Swimming in hot spring water is possible in the thermal Rennes-les-Bains pools; if you seek coolness and a place to swim in spring water you can also find it in Alet-les-Bains. There are also a few lakes in the neighbourhood. From Quillan it is only a 90-minute drive to the coast (Perpignan). Collioure and Port-Vendre are splendid seaside villages with beautiful bays.
Andorra is famous for its tax-free shopping, and is accessible through a beautiful two-hour car or bus drive through the mountains.
