Location
Poilhes is a listed village in the Languedoc and is protected from unsightly development. The Canal du Midi runs through the middle of the village, on it's way to other canal villages. The towpath that runs along the canal is a pleasure to walk or cycle, in all seasons. The village is surrounded by vineyards, which change to spectacular colours in the autumn, and on a clear day one can gaze south and even see the tip of Mont Canigou in the Pyrenées.

Poilhes is divided in half by the pleasantly meandering Canal du Midi. The house is in the oldest half of the village, and seconds away from the canal and two lovely restaurants. A small store and a daily bread truck serve the village, whilst complete shopping is five minutes away in the town of Capestang with it's permanent shops, two weekly outdoor markets and large supermarket.

Natural attractions of the Languedoc include lakes, rivers for swimming, mountains, tropical gardens, nature reserves, as well as the Mediterranean. Historical attractions are just as numerous and include, the Roman site & museum of the Oppidum d'Enserune and the cathedral of Narbonne 30 minutes from Poilhes. Just outside Narbonne one can visit the magnificently restored Cistercian monastery of Fontfroide, where an incident which sparked the first Albigensian Crusade was reputed to have happened.
Fifteen minutes drive east of Poilhes one can stroll through the famous Friday Flower Market and Cathedral of the city of Béziers, and 20 minutes from Poilhes one can enjoy some of the most enticing beaches in the Mediterranean.
For those with an interest in the Middle Ages, there are the Cathar castles such as Minerve, situated between two deep gorges, and Carcassonne, an intact Medieval city and the site of many an historical film and summer medieval music & dance festivals.

Poilhes is within easy driving distance of International airports - Montpellier (1 hour), Carcassonne (75 mins), Toulouse (2 hours) Perpignan (90 mins) and Barcelona (3.5 hours). The Béziers (15 mins) railway station offers a TGV connection to Paris via Montpellier.
