La Maison du Puits
The HouseLocated in a Provencal village between Avignon and Arles, the house dates back to the 13th century. It is our second home and is situated just within the ramparts of an old fortified chateaux and about 100 metres from the village square. Part of the structure contains the communal well and washing sinks for the old fortified town, hence the name ‘La Maison du Puits’ or ‘The Well House’. The house floor area is 120sq meters on 3 floors and was totally renovated in 1999 by a local stone mason. It has 3 bedrooms, (two doubles and one twin) and two bathrooms. A bed settee in the lounge means it can sleep up to 8. The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Bouches-du-Rhone regionThe Bouches du Rhone region has a warm mediterranian climate in summer with daytime temperatures in the 30's. It was the clear blue skys and the unique light which attracted Vincent Van Gough to the area in 1888. Winters are often sunny with clear blue skies but can be very cold when the north 'mistral' wind blows. The area is steeped in Roman history and was originally named by the Romans as Provencia. Famous Roman landmarks are the arenas at Arles and Nimes and the Pont du Gard aqueduct. The area has a strong influence from the Camargue with 'abrivado' and 'course carmagaise' in many towns and villages. Boulbon areaThe town of Boulbon (population 1600) is steeped in history and was first mentioned in the history books in the 11th century.
It lies some 16 kilometres south west of Avignon and close to many well known provencal landmarks such as St Rémy-de-Provence, Les Baux-de-Provence, Nîmes and Arles. To the west lies the Rhône plain, ideal for cycling, and to the east the hills of La Montagnette with marvellous walks and mountain bike tracks. Mediterranean coastal resorts such as Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer are about an hours drive. The nature reserves of the Camargue are about half an hour as is the famous Roman aqueduct, ‘Pont du Gard’
The town offers the following shopping facilities; - Mini Supermarket - Baker - Butcher - Chemist - Winebar - Hotel/Restaurant, La Bastide du Boulbon - Bar/Lunchtime Restaurant, Cafe du Commerce - Tabac
Other nearby restaurants are about 4 kilometres away on the road to Avignon.
The town has many fêtes and festivals the most promenant of which are;
Bénédiction des Bouteilles on 1st June each year. All men from the town are presented with a bottle of fortified wine which they take to church in procession to be blessed. The blessed wine is then used by the family throughout the year as an ailment remedy.
The Fête de la St Eloi on the last weekend in August. This starts with a church service in Provencal followed by a parade which includes a chariot pulled by 18 horsed at a canter thoughout the town. A formal lunch is served in the town square followed later by bull running in the streets (abravado) and dancing in the square.
The Fête du Club Taurin is in the last weekend of September. It is organised by the local bull club and includes young men taunting bulls with the aim of removing ribbons from their horns (course carmagaise) and bull running in the street (abravado)
The town has municipal tennis and boules courts and rackets, tennis balls and boules are available for the use of quests.
