La Petite Bergerie
Dating back more than a 100 years, this property is typically Provencal, with exposed stone-walls and rustic charm. La Petite Bergerie is set in a hectare of its own tranquil and rural gounds amongst the vines (from the neighbouring Chateau Mentone), Olive trees and lavender fields with Var pine forest views in all directions. La Petite Bergerie is a two bedroom cottage (one double, two singles) with a shower bathroom and a bright airy kitchen /lounge / indoor dining as well as a choice of outdoor terraces to while away provencal afternoons and evenings with the BBQ. The property sits on two split levels with the master bedroom downstairs leading to a large terrace (furnished with quality dining table and chairs and BBQ) shaded by much coveted ancient oaks and overlooking a small stream at the foot of the terrace. The fully-equipped kitchen /lounge area is upstairs with far-reaching window views. The sofa and chair lounge area is separated from the fully equipped kitchen by a butcher block style bar with stools for indoor dining. A large wood burning fire is a key feature to this bright, open space.
The twin bedded room, is closest to the pool which, with it's large open terrace area amongst the pines sits higher than the house and where visitors can spend many hours with open and forest views all round. Comfortable poolside furniture, cushions and pool towels are at your disposal.
The cottage is simply furnished with provencal colours, fabrics and decor which, due to the thick stone walls, keeps cool in the hot summer months and alongwith the underfloor heating and two wood-burning fires, keep it cosy in winter - year round holiday enjoyment.
The pool is open from beginning of June to the end of September which is reflected in the out of season pricing.
Please ask about long-term rental from end of September to end of April available each year.
St Antonin-du-Var, just a five minutes drive away, is a quiet little village so typical of the provence region. It has its own wine co operative, a boulangerie, a thriving mini-mart (which stocks everything), a small hotel / restaurant / bar (the heart of the community), boules pitches, tennis courts (which can be booked), a hair salon and the most beautiful chapel (Notre Dame de L'Assomption) to visit.
The nearest market town, only about 10 minutes drive away, is Lorgues where you will find the larger supermarkets, plenty of cafes and restaurants as well as the famous provencal weekly market on Tuesdays.
Nearest beaches It will take about 50 mins to drive to the coast from St Antonin. Sainte Maxime is the easiest resort to get to but from there St Tropez and Port Grimaud are easily accessible and going in the other direction along the coast you will find Frejus and St Raphael.
If you take the slightly slower but very picturesque route across the Massif des Maures via La Garde-Freinet you will find the delightful small bay of Le Rayol as well as the larger resorts of Le Lavandou and Cavalaire-sur-Mer.
Around and about Inland and worth visiting are the lovely villages of Entrecasteaux (5kms), Tourtour, Salernes (famous for its ceramics), Cotignac and Draguignan (23 kms)... Draguignan, the old capital of the French artillery, where the plane tree-lined avenues offer extensive shopping as well as a number of attractions such as the Musee de L'artillerie and the Moulins a huile traditionnels.
Each of these towns and villages has its own local market day once a week (not to forget the lively Carces night market during the summer months) and a range of good restaurants. Many of them have their own wine cooperatives and you will also find some excellent local wine producers where you can go and buy your wine directly from the ‘domaine’ – including the stunning Chateau Mentone, on the property’s doorstep! A bit further afield (via the village of Aups – not to be missed), you can visit the ‘ Grand Canyon’ of the South of France, the Gorges du Verdon with its sparkling blue lake. Here you can hire canoes, pedaloes and sailing boats and make excursions into the dramatic scenery of the Gorges.
Airports Nice, Toulon and Marseille airports are each approx. an hour away.
