Provence Treasure
Stay in a completely restored house in the heart of town, next to the 14th century church with a 4th century baptistery. The panoramic view of Mt. Ventoux and les Dentelles de Montmirail are magical and delicious. This mountain is the site of the biggest climb in the Tour de France, called “the giant of Provence”. The historic house is built on the ancient stairway into the town with vaults and stairways in the caves dating from the middle ages. The home has four levels that were restored in 2003. The main floor has a large living/dining room with views to miles of vineyards and cherry trees including an 11th century Templar chapel. The kitchen is restored to a Provencal style with double farmhouse sinks and a wooden drying rack, equipped with a coffee maker and microwave oven, as well as a cook top/oven and refrigerator. A balcony off the kitchen suspends you in the heart of Provence. Upstairs, the large master bedroom in front overlooks the town square facing the church where festive weddings are held. The beds can be arranged as two singles or one king bed. The back double bedroom has a covered lookout, over cherry trees and the road to the 10th century Abbey of Senanque. The two bathrooms have showers with excellent water pressure and individual heaters, and there is an additional W.C. in the cave level below the main living area. There are two levels of “caves” which date from the Middle Ages and extend under the village church to provide an escape route for the Popes. See the ancient steps into the village and Roman artifacts found during the restoration. These levels are fabulous for natural “air-conditioning” even under the hottest of Provencal summers. 180 degree views to Mount Ventoux, the Mount Fuji of France, with the lights of Bedoin and Le Barroux twinkling at night. Venasque has a town center of about 50 houses. Horses would come to the town fountain for water. The town has two restaurants, a bakery, and a grocery store. Artwork is available in the tourist office. In contrast to Gordes, the town has no tourist shops for knickknacks. There is a market on Friday evenings during summer. Village inhabitants are friendly and take long hikes through the forest. The evening boules game is entertaining. The sunset is views are spectacular. The town is quiet at night. This is true Provencal life at a leisurely pace.
